A Nationwide Bookmark Search

In an effort to instill a love for reading and literacy among North Babylon High School students, English teacher Kimberley Maccarrone recently concluded a nationwide bookmark search that reached across borders.

Ms. Maccarrone's dedication to nurturing a passion for reading led her to reach out to independent bookstores across the United States and through Europe. She shared a letter that described North Babylon High School's commitment to helping students embrace the world of literature. The response that followed was nothing short of overwhelming.

During the summer, an influx of bookmarks arrived from all corners of the country. The bookmarks were more than mere tokens; they symbolized a shared commitment to keeping the flame of literacy alive. Donations poured in from more than 20 U.S. states. The famous Shakespeare & Co. bookstore in Paris, France, also contributed to this endeavor.

Each set of bookmarks came with its unique story, and many bookstores included lovely notes and photos that resonated with the North Babylon students. The messages encouraged the young readers to continue their literary journeys and, perhaps, visit these distant bookstores one day.

Ms. Maccarrone has brought the magic of these bookmarks into the classroom, sharing them with all English Language Arts teachers and students at North Babylon High School. This bookmark search illustrates the power of literature to unite people, transcending geographical boundaries.
