Be Our Guest’ for Beauty and the Beast

On February 5 at 8:00pm, February 6 at 2:00 and 8:00 pm, the North Babylon High School Drama Club will present Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in the High School Auditorium.

The production is one of the most ambitious ever to be performed on the NBHS stage and will feature hundreds of costumes, including beautiful dresses for Belle. "There will also be spectacular sets, props and special effects, all guaranteed to make this wonderful fantasy fairy tale a delightful experience" says Director David Signorelli. More than 60 performers will sing and dance through such favorites as “Be Our Guest” and “Beauty and the Beast,” while an orchestra of more than 20 will play the nearly continuous musical accompaniment under the leadership of Musical Director Jay Orig. Behind the scenes, more than 30 designers, costumers, tech personnel, crew members and support staff are working together with Artistic Director Veronica Murphy to create this spectacular production.

Tickets are on sale now and by General Admission (unreserved seating).  Adults are $7, Seniors and Children/Students are $6 each.  For ticket information, call 631 321 3283 between 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday through Friday.  Tickets may be available at the door, but that is not guaranteed.

An original greeting card....by North Babylon High School Art Students!

NBHS Art Students and their teacher,  Ms. Tobi Shinnick, have graced the windows of the North Babylon Post Office with a life-size winter greeting.  The "Winter Fantasy" mural features gnomes, fairies and dragons in a winter setting.  2009 marks the 10th year that students have enjoyed a school to work partnership with local busnesses, including the Post Office, local Banks and Library.  Student artists and musicians enjoy work-like experiences in a volunteer setting with guidance from the expert North Babylon arts teachers.  Come out and enjoy the mural for yourself at the North Babylon Post Office.  Happy Holidays to all!

The NAMM Foundation  has announced the results of the ninth annual “Best Communities for Music Education” survey, which includes 110 school districts across the U.S. The designated programs exemplify community commitment to include music education as part of a quality education for all children. The NAMM Foundation and its music education advocacy efforts work to ensure that all children have access to quality music education programs that encourage lifelong participation in music making.

This year’s roster of musical schools represents 29 states with New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia representing the most districts. To view the complete roster of “Best Communities,” visit

North Babylon has been a recipient of this honor in 2003, 2006 and 2008.  We are thrilled with this marvelous news and look forward to celebrating it with our community and students at our Spring Concerts.

NBHS Drama students attend Adelphi University Student Art Conference

On Wednesday October 14, eleven Theatre IV students participated in Adelphi University's Annual Student Arts Conference. Along with their teacher, David Signorelli, our highly motivated theatre students attended workshops in production, design, stagecraft, acting, stage combat, dance, and using vocal characterisations.  They were joined by over one hundred students from high schools across Long Island. After lunch, they were treated to a Keynote Address by Daphne Rubin-Vega, singer, dancer, and Broadway actress ( the original Mimi in "Rent"). Students had the opportunity throughout the day to network with their high school peers as well as Adelphi college students, their professors, and two former NBHS theatre department graduates who are currently Adelphi theatre students. The entirely free conference provided by the Adelphi University Arts Department was a very enlightening, educational, and enjoyable experience for our outstanding theatre students.

Michelle Obama tells international audience why the arts matter

September 25, 2009 |  5:10 pm (reprinted from the Los Angeles Times)

US-G20-ECONOMY-FINANCE-#F53

Michelle Obama hosted a concert this morning at the Pittsburgh Creative & Performing Arts School for its students and the spouses of international leaders deliberating at the G-20 economic summit.  She gave an 11-minute address about the arts as a prelude to performances by guests Sara Bareilles, Yo-Yo Ma and Trisha Yearwood. Here are  excerpts from her speech, from a transcript issued by the White House:

We believe strongly that the arts aren't somehow an 'extra’ part of our national life, but instead we feel that the arts are at the heart of our national life. It is through our music, our literature, our art, drama and dance that we tell the story of our past and we express our hopes for the future. Our artists challenge our assumptions in ways that many cannot and do not. They expand our understandings, and push us to view our world in new and very unexpected ways…..

"It's through this constant exchange -- this process of taking and giving, this process of borrowing and creating -- that we learn from each other and we inspire each other.  It is a form of diplomacy in which we can all take part….

“[T]oday ... we're presenting the gifts of these wonderful American artists to our friends from all around the world. And these artists are passing on the gift of their magnificent example to these young people who are here today, studying in this school -- showing them that if they dream big enough, and work hard enough, and believe in themselves, that they can do and achieve some uncommon things in their lifetime….

"That is the core of my mission as first lady -- to share the gifts that come with life in the White House with as many of our young people as I possibly can find. That's why I've worked to make the White House a showcase of America's rich cultural life….

ObamasKennedyCenter

"[T]he truth is, is that even though many….kids are living in Washington, D.C. and in cities across the country, just minutes away from the centers of culture and power and prestige, many of them feel like these resources are really miles away, very far beyond their reach. That's something that I felt growing up.

"And my husband and I are determined to help to bridge that distance. It is critical that we begin to bridge that distance.

"We want to show these young people that they have a place in our world, in our museums, our theaters, our concert halls.... We want them to experience the richness of our nation's cultural heritage, one on one, up close and personal, not on TV.  We want to show them that they can have a future in the arts community -- whether it's a hobby, or a profession, or simply as an appreciative observer….

"In the end, those efforts, and the performances we're enjoying today, and the work these artists do every day here in America and around the world -- all of that reminds us of a simple truth: that both individually and collectively, we all have a stake in the arts, every single one of us.

"And you don't need to be rich or powerful to lift your voice in song or get out of your seat and shake your groove thing. [Laughter.] You don't need to be a Van Gogh to paint a picture, or a Maya Angelou to write a poem. You don't need a Grammy or an Oscar or an Emmy to make your work on the cultural life of your community or your country a valuable one.

"And ... people who might not speak a single word of the same language, who might not have a single shared experience, might still be drawn together when their hearts are lifted by the notes of a song, or their souls are stirred by a vision on a canvas.

"That is the power of the arts -- to remind us of what we each have to offer, and what we all have in common; to help us understand our history and imagine our future; to give us hope in the moments of struggle; and to bring us together when nothing else will. "

NBHS Musicians Named to All County

Congratulations to Jared Ginsburg (alto sax), Emily Abma (soprano), Jamie Calo (Alto), Dawn Lee (soprano), Raluchukwu Monwe (Bass), Jon Quarant (tenor) and Shannelle Riccio (alto) on their selection to the NYSCAME All County Music Festival this year.

North Babylon students named to All-State Music Festival

Brad Lubman

This past spring almost 100,000 students participated in NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festivals at over 80 locations around the state.  Of that number, over six thousand students auditioned in the All-State category.  Adjudicators identified the very best performers on each instrument and vocal part, and ranked them in order of proficiency.  More than 2,500 students were recommended for consideration. This year, one performer and three alternates from North Babylon have been selected by NYSSMA. Congratulations to Junior Jon Quarant who sang Tenor in the Mixed Festival Chorus.

In addition to Jon, Jared Ginsberg, Emily Abma and Jamie Calo were selected as alternates to the Festival.  We congratulate the students and their wonderful teachers, Ms. Irene Seubert and Mr. Frank Rizzo, on this fantastic achievement.  For additional information on the All-State selection process, click here.

These students from Mrs. Kennely's Portfolio Class had their portraits on exhibit at the North Babylon Public Library during November, 2009.

Does music study make you smarter?

Findings from a recent study published in Psychological Science reports:

The findings indicate that music lessons cause small increases in IQ,

but comparable nonmusical activities do not have similar consequences.

By contrast, drama lessons had favorable effects on social

behavior that were not evident in the music groups.

How can one explain the association between music lessons and IQ?

It is well established that simple attendance at school raises IQ (Ceci &

Williams, 1997), and that school instruction is particularly effective

when classes are small (Ehrenberg, Brewer, Gamoran, & Wilms, 2001).

Music lessons, taught individually or in small groups, may provide

additional boosts in IQ because they are like school but still enjoyable.

Moreover, music lessons involve a multiplicity of experiences that

could generate improvement in a wide range of abilities.

Daedalus Quartet to return to

North Babylon Schools

For the third consecutive year, the orchestral students of North Babylon will participate in an artist residency with the winners of the Guarneri String Quartet Award, the Daedalus Quartet.  Reviewed by the New York Times: "imaginative phrasing and dynamics...a riveting focus", these Long Island natives will spend three days working with students from grades 4-12, sharing everything from technique and tuning tips to performances.  Fresh off successful performances at this summer's Mostly Mozart Festival in Lincoln Center, Daedalus is the Quartet-in-Residence at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania. This year, the Quartet will visit the High School and Middle School Orchestra students on Wednesday, February 3.  They will return the following day, February 4, to perform concerts for all elementary level orchestra students at which the Quartet will play the actual Spring Concert selections that the students will be playing in June. There will also be workshops on technique and time for questions and answer.  The residency will conclude with the District String Festival, scheduled for March 24th at the High School.

The residency is completely funded by a grant from Chamber Music America and the North Babylon School District.  For more information about the Quartet, click here.

Here are suggestions from the Music Educators National Conference regarding audience etiquette for school concerts:

10 RULES OF CONCERT ETIQUETTE FOR ADULTS

Refrain from talking.  This is the first and greatest rule. This rule includes whispering to or disciplining your other children.

Refrain from unwrapping noisy candy wrappers during the performance. If the composers wanted to include crinkle paper noises in the music, they would have.

Turn off pagers, cell phones and watch alarms. While many phones and pagers now have very symphonic-like rings, they don't always fit into the musical score, nor do they provide pleasant sounds for your neighbors.

Do not wave to your child during the concert. After all, they do know who you are already, and they know you are there; you most likely brought them to the concert.

Do not take flash photography. You don't want your child to walk off the edge of the stage from flash blindness, do you?

Do not walk down the center aisle with your video camera.
Video cameras work just as well from the back of the auditorium. (Besides, the light is usually not good enough for videotaping anyway. )

Do not leave as soon as your child's portion of the concert is over. All of the students deserve a full audience for their performances. Remember, the next time your child's song could come last.

Applaud at appropriate times. Some music has several sections. Remember, it's not over until all of the sections have been performed.

Do not leave the auditorium during the music
. Wait for a break in the concert to visit the restroom, unless you are carrying a screaming child, in which case you should leave quietly and quickly, please!

Go to the concert expecting the best.
You just might be surprised how good your student sounds when other students join in.
