Mrs. Finnick:  A.M. Good morning from the guidance department... When life seems really difficult…when your parent has lost their job or you have been grounded for two weeks or you’ve argued with a close friend…it can be hard to focus on what’s good & right in the world & it’s a challenge to be grateful for anything.  There’s an old African proverb:  If something that was going to chop off your head only knocked off your cap, you should be grateful.  In other words, things could always be worse, & it’s useful to stop & think about what’s right & good in your world…like the roof over your head, the clothes on your back & the privilege of getting an education.  Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.  If you did what would there be to look forward to?  Be thankful when you don’t know something for it gives you the opportunity to learn.  Be thankful for the difficult times – during those times you grow.  Be thankful for your limitations because they give you opportunities for improvement.  Be thankful for each new challenge because it will build your strength & character.  Be thankful for your mistakes they will teach you valuable lessons.  Be thankful when you’re tired & weary because it means you’ve made a difference.  It is easy to be thankful for the good things.  A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.  Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.  Find a way to be thankful for your troubles & they can become your blessings.  I want you to take a moment right now & think about three things you are grateful for.  That’s what Thanksgiving is all about.  Remember the Attitude of Gratitude is something to have all year!

Mrs. Golden, your eligibility advisor:  A.M. & P.M. There will be a meeting for grade 7 & 8 students who are currently ineligible on Monday, November 30, 2009.  This meeting will be held period 1 in the auditorium.  Please report to your first period class & then go to the auditorium for this meeting.  If you are in grade 6 there will be a meeting for ineligible students on Tuesday, December 1, 2009.  This meeting will be held period 1 in the auditorium.  You are to report to your first period class & then go to the auditorium.

Mrs. Finnick:  A.M. Good morning from the guidance department.   Attitude of Gratitude continues.  Have you ever had a craving for something that just wouldn’t go away…like a craving for chocolate or a craving for pizza?  We all get cravings from time to time & that’s OK.  What’s not okay is when we constantly crave things we don’t have…when we spend too much time craving more clothes or craving new shoes or craving a bigger house or a nicer car.  Listen to these words written almost two thousand years ago by a Roman philosopher by the name of Seneca:  ‘It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor’.  Sounds just like that Japanese proverb we’ve heard before:  ‘He who knows not when he has enough is poor’.  Today focus on what you have instead of what you don’t have.  You may be surprised to discover that you have enough. Samuel Pugh said these wise words:

When I have food – help me to remember the hungry.

When I have work – help me to remember the jobless.

When I have a warm home – help me to remember the homeless.

When I am without pain – help me to remember those who suffer.

By remembering – help me to destroy my complacency & raise my compassion.

Make me concerned enough to help, by word & deed those who cry out for what we take for granted.

Everyone today is receiving a card that says I am grateful for…write down something that you are grateful for in your life.  You may sign your name if you want.  Your teacher will collect the cards & we will hang them around the building in a chain of gratitude.  Make it a great day!

Coach Jones:  A.M. To the Field Hockey Team:  Your pictures are in. See Coach Jones to pick them up.

Mrs. Finnick:  A.M. Good morning from the guidance department.  Welcome to Attitude of Gratitude Week at Robert Moses!  Research has shown that gratitude is what gives life meaning.  Robert Emmons, a professor at University of California, has done eight years of research on the science of gratitude & has discovered…People who view life as a gift & take on an attitude of gratitude will experience multiple advantages in their lives.  Gratitude improves emotional & physical health & it can strengthen relationships & communities.  It is a chosen attitude.  A person must give up a “victim” mentality & overcome a sense of entitlement & deservedness.  As a result they will experience significant improvements in several areas of life including relationships, academics, energy level & even dealing with tragedy & crisis.  Gratitude is not just for Thanksgiving Day!  Everyone today is receiving a blank postcard.  Please choose someone in the building that you would like to thank for something they have done & write their name, why you are thanking them & sign your name.  Give it to them this week.  Together, let’s work on focusing on what we have – not on what we don’t have -- & all the ways we can help one another have more gratitude for the gift of life.  Have a great – ful day!
