Mrs. E. Efstathiou: Science Classroom Procedures (PLEASE KEEP IN FRONT OF YOUR NOTEBOOK!) 1. PREPARATION: You must come to class on time with your notebook and at least one pen/pencil. Keep books/bags under your seat or desk, out of the way so no one will trip! 2. HOMEWORK: If all homeworks are completed in a satisfactory manner, you will receive a 100 homework average. For each homework missed, 1 point will be deducted from your overall average. For incomplete homework ˝ a point will be deducted from your overall average. Homeworks handed in late will NOT be given credit. *** (THIS IS SCHOOL POLICY - NO EXCEPTIONS). *** Do not forget to complete or hand in homework assignments; It is a careless way to bring down your average, and every three missed homeworks is a phone call home and detention. 3. NOTEBOOK & SUPPLIES: Your notebook is your most important possession in my class! Always keep it organized and neat. You MUST have a (1) 3-ring binder with (2) plenty of looseleaf paper, and (3) 4 dividers labeled: Class Work, Homework, Labs, and Graded Work (looseleaf is not needed in Graded Work or Labs sections). All handouts must have your name and the date on them. I will perform notebook checks periodically. You will always be notified before a notebook check. You must also bring in a (4) marble notebook to be kept in class as a Science Journal. Journals will be graded every quarter. I also strongly recommend you keep (5) two extra folders at home. At the end of each unit, you will be able to clean out your notebooks and place the material in your folder. If you continue to do this in a careful manner you will have an organized, sequenced set of notes ready to be used for final exams and the 8th Grade Science Assessment. You must also come to class with a (6,7) pen or pencil*. There are also days where a calculator is required. If you do not have one already please get a (8) 4 function (+, -, x, -) calculator nothing fancy please! Finally some lessons require (9) highlighters. It doesn’t matter what color, as long as the writing underneath can be read clearly through it. I will inform you at least a day before you need to bring a calculator to class, so keep it handy in your locker! You will also receive a Measuring Up Review Book to help study and prepare for the assessment during the year. This book must be brought to class with you daily. *pencil is required the day we take unit tests! 4. BEHAVIOR: Please familiarize yourself with the following classroom discipline plan. There are four behaviors and/or actions that are not tolerated in this classroom. For each time you are identified as doing any of these things you will receive a letter as follows: T – Talking O- Being Off-Task I – Acting Inappropriately A – Arguing At the end of each week, the students that have received no letters will get a reward. Students that have 3 or more letters will receive detention. Every three letters results in one detention. Bottom line-everyone respects everyone and everything else in the room. This classroom is also a LAB – therefore there is ABSOLUTELY NO EATING OR DRINKING. 5. LATENESS: It is important to be in your seat, ready to start the DO NOW when the bell rings. When you are late you are missing out on the lesson, as well as distracting your peers when you disrupt the class with your arrival. Every 3 latenesses without a pass results in detention, and a phone call home. 6. ABSENCES: YOU are responsible for any work missed. You can pick up handouts from the trays near my desk** marked Monday - Friday. Ask the other students in your class for notes, homework and assignments, and important announcements you missed. ESPECIALLY LABS!! 7. TEXTBOOK: We use the textbook for homework and to reinforce the material. Leave it at home, (not in your locker). It does NOT have to be brought to class. We will also be using a Measuring UP review book for he assessment. This must come to class with you daily. 8. EXTRA HELP: After School. Days and Times TBA 9. ATTITUDE FOR SUCCESS: I want you to enjoy class, be interested in science and improve your work habits. I look for organization, effort, pride in your work, motivation, participation, enthusiasm, and the ability to work with others. Get ready for a great year!!! 10. GRADING POLICY: Homeworks 10% Labs 30% Quizzes/Projects 30% Tests 30% 11. ASSESSMENT: A chapter quiz and lab will be given every week. Unit Tests will be given about once a month. Every quarter a cumulative exam is given. (HOLD ON TO YOUR NOTES!!) This year you will be taking the state wide Science Assessment which consists of a lab practical section and a written section. 12. CURRICULUM: EIGHTH GRADE: COVERS 5-8 EARTH SCIENCE, PHYSICAL SCIENCE, & LIFE SCIENCE. I have read and understand the terms of this agreement x_____________________________ Parent/Guardian Signature |
