Mr. J. Pollock : SIXTH GRADE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR PARENTS The following information is a guide to help you make it through the sixth grade!!! I. HOMEWORK POLICYA. Homework is given every night except Friday, unless necessary. B. All homework must be completed in the appropriate binder. 1. All handouts should be placed in the correct binder folder. 2. All questions should be answered in complete sentences (Social Studies & Science) 3. Math homework – all work must be shown. Students must work out all problems. C. Homework involves studying each night. D. Missing homework policy – If the assigned homework is not in the class when it is due, 10 points will be taken off your child’s homework grade. If your child is unprepared then 5 points will be deducted from his/her homework grade. If your child does not have their textbook covered, 1 point will be deducted from his/her homework grade for every day the book is not covered. II. THE AGENDAA. The agenda is used in all subject areas. Students should carry this book with them at all times. The following pages are important for you to look at: 1. Record of Achievement – This is where your child records all test grades. Please keep a close watch on your child’s progress. 2. Homework Assignment pages – All homework and reminders are copied down each day. Please emphasize the importance of copying homework correctly from the blackboard into the agenda. This may be a new responsibility for your child. 3. Homework is also listed on the Internet. Go to: · click on homework net · click on Ms. Ferreri or Mr. Pollock for assignments 4. Parent/Teacher communication - Please look at your child’s agenda nightly for any notes that may be sent home. Please feel free to write any notes in the agenda and have your child show it to us the following day. III. GRADING SYSTEMA. Students are given a percentage grade on all quizzes and tests. B. All quizzes and Math tests count once in the grade book. All other tests count twice in the grade book. Your child should enter all of these grades into his/her agenda (Record of Achievement). C. All tests and quizzes must be signed by a parent and returned. Suggestion: Every week, ask your child for the tests and quizzes that need to be signed. You should be seeing several quizzes and tests coming home on a weekly basis! *** If you do not see grades entered in your child’s agenda, please contact us for the missing grades. *** D. Any quiz or test that is not taken in class when scheduled must be made up after school during 9th period in room 240 or 242 with Mr. Pollock or Ms. Ferreri. Your child will need to take the late bus home. IV. EXTRA HELP A. Extra help for Mr. Pollock’s classes will be held in room 240 on Tuesday each week. Extra help for Ms. Ferreri’s classes will be held in room 242 on Thursday each week. The late bus leaves at 3:05. V. CLASSROOM POLICYA. Lateness – If late for class without a pass, students receive detention. Lateness applies to any student not in their seat when the bell rings. Detention must be served on the date indicated by the teacher assigning the detention. B. Talking out /Misbehavior– If a student is constantly talking out at an inappropriate time or misbehaving, they are given detention. C. If a Student is Absent – All students must have a “study buddy”. If your child is not in school, the following steps should be taken: 1. Your child can call his or her study buddy and request that work be collected. Please make sure your child has a study buddy. Please make sure phone numbers have been exchanged. 2. You can call the Guidance Office and arrange to have all work prepared by the end of the day for you to pick up. D. If a student is in a pull–out program (band, orchestra, chorus)- All students are expected to discuss what took place in class with their study buddy. The following things must also be done: 1. Students are to get class notes from their buddy. These should be put in the appropriate section of the binder. 2. Students must complete the assignment that has been assigned for the night. They are not excused from completing any assignments. 3. They are responsible for all work missed that day. E. Organization – students are expected to come to class prepared with the following items: 1. Correct textbooks, workbooks 2. Homework assigned the previous night 3. Supply box (pens and pencils should always be in class) 4. Agenda 5. Binder/notebook Please discuss our rules and expectations with your child. This will help your child adjust to the sixth grade rules and procedures. |
