North Babylon Music Students Excel at NYSSMA Majors Festival

Music students from Robert Moses Middle School and North Babylon High School showcased their talent and dedication at the NYSSMA Majors Festival in May. A total of nine ensembles performed music at levels 1–5, earning impressive Silver and Gold ratings, along with valuable adjudicator feedback to further enhance their musical growth.

NYSSMA Majors (New York State School Music Association Major Ensemble Festival) is a highly respected event designed for large school ensembles, typically consisting of 17 or more performers. Each ensemble performs multiple selections from the NYSSMA Manual and is evaluated by a panel of professional adjudicators. Groups are assessed on tone, intonation, technique, interpretation, and sight-reading skills, receiving a Bronze, Silver, or Gold rating accompanied by detailed written commentary. Performances are categorized by levels 1 through 6, with level 1 representing beginner repertoire and level 6 reflecting advanced literature.

Participation in NYSSMA Majors plays a critical role in the continued growth of North Babylon’s music program by:

  • Providing constructive, professional feedback to guide student progress

  • Offering clear benchmarks through level-based evaluations

  • Inspiring students with prestigious ratings that celebrate achievement

  • Strengthening teamwork and musicianship through rigorous preparation

  • Building community recognition and support for the arts

“Performing at NYSSMA Majors challenges our students to strive for excellence while giving them the opportunity to learn and grow through expert feedback,” said Elizabeth O’Brien, Director of Fine and Performing Arts for the North Babylon School District. “Their success reflects not only their talent, but also their hard work and the dedication of our outstanding music educators.”

The North Babylon School District congratulates all participating students and ensembles for their remarkable accomplishments and looks forward to continued musical excellence in the years to come.

Behind the scenes, the talented student pit orchestra provided live music, while the stage crew and costume crew worked tirelessly to create seamless scene changes, stunning visuals, and imaginative designs that made the fairy-tale world a reality. This production truly showcased the teamwork, creativity, and dedication of North Babylon’s fine and performing arts students.

Instrument Petting Zoo

In May, North Babylon High School musicians hosted an Instrument Petting Zoo, creating a warm, family-like atmosphere where third-grade students explored the world of music. The event gave students the chance to try out a variety of band and orchestra instruments, listen to live demonstrations, and receive guidance from experienced high school performers. This tradition reflects the strong sense of community and commitment that defines the North Babylon music program, with teachers, students, and families coming together to inspire the next generation of musicians. The day was filled with excitement, support, and the shared joy of making music!

North Babylon High School Launches TV Studio Classes
North Babylon High School proudly introduced its inaugural TV Studio classes this year, led by teacher James Avila. Thirty students explored the world of media production, learning to frame shots, manage audio and video, edit with CapCut, design graphics, and create logos. Highlights included producing their first live news brief and interviewing the Superintendent. Building on this success, three classes will run this school year with the goal of creating a recurring show to spotlight school events and activities.
