Fifth graders at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School “let it snow” during a recent STEM building challenge.
Following a lesson on snowflakes, the students sketched out a one-of-a-kind design of their own, noting the six sides. After their drawings were complete, students were handed a bag of items that included one large marshmallow, 20 small marshmallows and 20 toothpicks. They were tasked with replicating their drawings of the snowflakes using the provided materials.
The young engineers watched their unique snowflake drawings become three-dimensional objects. The students then used science facts to write a story about what it would be like to become a snowflake falling from the sky for the first time.
