First Chapter Fridays at DeLuca Elementary

Posted Date: 10/16/25 (:00 AM)

Every Friday, a literary mystery unfolds in Ms. Ruhl’s classroom at William E. DeLuca Elementary School. The school’s librarian, Mrs. Bzdyk, visits with a new chapter book tucked under her arm — but she only reveals the first chapter. This literacy initiative, known as First Chapter Fridays, is designed to build excitement around reading and encourage students to explore new genres and authors.

By ending each reading on a suspenseful note, Mrs. Bzdyk leaves students wondering what will happen next. The choice is then up to them: Will they visit the library to check out the book and continue the story on their own?

This weekly tradition has quickly become a hit. Students are eagerly making predictions, discussing characters and sharing theories with one another. More importantly, they are developing a love of reading and discovering the joy of independent book exploration. All featured books are available in the school library, giving students immediate access to continue their literary journey.
First Chapter Fridays not only supports reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, but also builds excitement, curiosity and lifelong reading habits — one chapter at a time.
