Fractured Fairy Tales Take Center Stage in Fifth Grade

Posted Date: 02/09/26 (12:00 AM)

Fifth grade students at William E. DeLuca Elementary School recently celebrated their creativity and hard work by hosting a publishing party to showcase their original fractured fairy tale pieces. The event, held on Jan. 29, marked the culmination of a two-month writing unit focused on understanding and creating fractured fairy tales.

Throughout the unit, students learned what makes a fractured fairy tale unique by studying classic stories and exploring how authors can creatively twist familiar characters, settings and plots. Students worked through the full writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising, illustrating and publishing their final stories.

As part of the celebration, students invited a special guest to join them for the event. Gathering together, the fifth graders proudly shared their finished fairy tales, reading their stories to guests and explaining the creative choices behind their work. The young authors took center stage, showcasing both their writing skills and imaginations.

This culminating activity not only highlighted the students’ creativity but also reinforced the importance of the writing process, helping students see themselves as real authors. The event was a memorable way to bring the fractured fairy tale unit to life and celebrate the power of student voice.
