Seniors Earn Spot in Youth Leadership Institute
North Babylon High School seniors Jairo Cortes and Daniel Carhuallanqui have successfully completed training for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute and were selected to join the Long Island delegation.
This year, more than 70 students from across Long Island participated in the program. According to organizers Dr. Erica Flores and Dr. Jordan Gonzalez, this year’s cohort was the most competitive yet. Following the training and selection process, 45 students were chosen to represent Long Island at the New York Statewide PRHYLI program in Albany.
As part of the statewide experience, student delegates will travel to the New York State Capitol, where they will join peers from across New York to participate in a Mock Assembly. During the program, students will debate and vote on four proposed bills they previously explored during the Long Island Mock Assembly.
PRHYLI provides students with a unique opportunity to learn about state government, develop leadership skills and gain firsthand experience in the legislative process.
