DeLuca Event Celebrates Students’ Differences

Posted Date: 05/16/26 (12:00 AM)

In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, students throughout William E. DeLuca Elementary School participated in its second “Uniquely You: Celebrating Neurodiversity” event on April 24, fostering awareness, understanding and appreciation for the diverse ways individuals experience the world.

The initiative, lead by Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists and STRIVE teachers, with support from special area teachers, featured a series of engaging, hands-on learning stations designed to promote empathy and inclusivity.

Students rotated through each station, gaining valuable insights into how different supports can enhance learning and communication. At the sensory integration station, students explored how sensory input can influence emotions, focus and behavior. During the movement break station, they discovered how short bursts of physical activity can help regulate the body and prepare the brain for learning.

Another station introduced students to Augmentative and Alternative Communication, where they explored communication boards and voice output devices, learning how individuals express themselves in a variety of ways. The experience concluded with a read-aloud of “All My Stripes” by Danielle Royer and Shaina Rudolph, a story that highlights the importance of empathy, self-worth and celebrating individuality.

Through meaningful discussions and interactive activities, students developed a deeper understanding of neurodiversity and the importance of creating inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and supported.
